Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. This can encompass a wide range of experiences such as from an accident, divorce or the death of a loved one. And every person will respond differently to that experience. What is traumatic for one person may be less so for another.
Trauma often results in Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). ASD refers to symptoms of distress during the month after the incident. PTSD refers to similar symptoms that continue after the first month. ASD/PTSD happens when your body struggles to make sense of a traumatic incident. It is a form of anxiety that develops and is accompanied by intense and disturbing thoughts, feelings and memories long after the incident has ended. These thoughts and emotions negatively affect your ability to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.
Many women, and men, have experienced trauma because of an abusive relationship. If that is you, know that you are not alone, and we at The Story Isn’t Over have therapists who have been through this themselves and can help you.
