Mental illness comes in all shapes and sizes, and for some the more well-known mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression, evolve into something more, and they find themselves struggling to cope with a diagnosis, such as bipolar disorder, or borderline personality disorders. In addition to that, many people struggling with a mental health diagnosis are also struggling with an addiction. Often, they started using the addictive substance in an effort to soothe the emotional distress the mental illness was causing, and as they continued to self-medicate the emotional distress they developed an addiction.
Whether it is a complex psychiatric disorder, or a combination of a psychiatric disorder and an addiction, it can consume our lives, affect our ability to live day by day, and hurt the people we love the most.
